Here is some nectar about the pastime of Govardhana’s appearance in this world.
Sri Govardhan’s appearance is narrated in Gargasamhita, Vrindavan section, chapter 2, written by Sri Gargacharyya. The topic was discussed in a dialogue between Nanda Maharaj and Sannanda in which Sannanda informed Nanda Maharaj about Govardhana’s appearance by giving reference to a conversation between Pandu and Bhisma.
Once Sri Krishna willed to appear in this world to relieve the burden of earth from the grave sins committed by demoniac kings. Krsna asked Radhika to come with Him, but She expressed her unwillingness to go to a place where Vrindavan, Yamuna and Sri Govardhan were not present.
To encourage Her, Krishna caused His own Transcendental Spiritual Realm - Vrajadham to descend to this world. Vrajadham is not a part of this material world and is not made of the material elements: earth, water, fire, air and sky, etc. It is an exact replica of Goloka in the spiritual sky. It is eternal and is not destroyed even when the whole universe is dissolved.
As part of the arrangement, Govardhan first appeared in this world as the son of the mountain, Dronachal on Shalmoli Island, west-India. All the demigods were exceedingly delighted at the appearance of Govardhan and showered flowers upon his birth.
Other big mountains like Himalaya and Sumeru were exceedingly happy to hear about Govardhan’s appearance and they came to pay their homage and to worship Him. In one of their prayers they stated:
“Govardhan is the holy place of pastimes of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna in the Transcendentally sweet realm of Goloka; He is the King of all mountains and the crown of Gokula; He is the umbrella of Sri Krishna and Sri Vrindavan is within His lap. Govardhan is Giriraj, the King of all mountains!”
Then, soon, it came to pass, that Pulastya Rishi, one of seven sons born from the mind of Brahma, was traveling on a pilgrimage and came to Shalmoli Island. He was astonished and charmed to see the extraordinary beauty of Govardhana so amply adorned with varieties of fruit and flower trees, pleasant sitting places, springs, fruits, vegetables, soft grass etc. When Dronachal, Govardhana’s father, saw Pulastya Muni he greeted him warmly and worshipped him according to custom.
Pulastya Muni then said to Dronachal, “I live in Kashi – in the presence of the Ganges and Visweswar Mahadev. Sinners go to my town to get salvation. But, now after seeing Govardhana, my desire is to perform my penances on His beautiful peaks. I want Him to adorn my city of Kasi. Please, give me your son. Let Govardhana come to stay with me forever in Kashi.”
Dronachal felt a thunderbolt of grief and separation strike him after hearing the sage’s request; but, out of fear of neglecting his duty and of being cursed, he nonetheless agreed and directed his beloved child to go to with Pulastya.
But, the question arose how the Muni could transport the gigantic Govardhana. Pulastya, undeterred, said that by his mystic potency, he could easily carry the mountain by keeping Him on the palm of his right hand.
Govardhan agreed to go with Muni but only on the condition that if the Muni set Him down for any reason, He would stay in that place, never to move again. Pulastya Muni accepted this condition, feeling certain that by his yogic powers, he could carry the mountain all the way to the destination.
Soon the Muni departed with Govardhana balanced on his right palm, proceeding slowly towards Kasi. As they traveled across the land, Govardhana noticed one evening that they were passing through Vrajadham. Upon seeing the Yamuna and remembering the sweet pastimes of Krishna, He yearned to remain there. By Govardhana’s divine powers, just at that time, he caused the muni to feel an overwhelming urge to answer the call of nature and simultaneously, Govardhana became extremely heavy.
Forgetting all about the pact, the muni absentmindedly set Govardhana down in Vrajadhama and went to perform his ablutions. When he returned, he asked Govardhan to sit again on his palm. Govardhana, however, reminded the sage of their agreement and would not budge from that spot. Pulastya tried with all his strength to lift Govardhana, but his attempt was in vain. Enraged, he uttered a curse — before departing alone — that Govardhana would daily shrink by the measure of a sesame seed.
(In Satya yuga, when Pulastya placed Him in Vrajadhama, Govardhana was
64 miles long; now he is a significantly smaller 7 miles long, and Garga Samhita says that He will disappear from our vision sometime in Kali Yuga.)
When Sanandana finished narrating this story, he informed Nanda Maharaja that as long as the Yamuna and Govardhana were manifest, Kali-yuga would not exert its full effect. He also said that anyone who hears the description of the appearance of Govardhana will be freed from all sins.
Govardhana stands in Vrajadhama to this day and millions of people come to see His beauty, circumambulating Him and begging for His benediction.
Giriraja ki, Jaya!
Another story about Govardhana Hill is that the monkey army of Lord Rama was carrying different stones to construct a bridge to Lanka. Sri Hanuman was carrying Govardhana from Himalayas to help built the bridge. As Hanuman was carrying Govardhana over Vraja, Nala and Neela, who were incharge of building the bridge declared that it was completed and no more stones were needed. Hanuman was in Vraja Mandala and he put Govardhana there. Thus it would appear that Govardhana was then lost in two ways. He was away from Lord Shiva and Lord Rama. Sri Rama heard about Govardhana crying and said that in Dwarpara Yuga he would make His appearance as Sri Krishna and would have His pastimes in that place, and would hold Govardhana up for seven days and nights to save the residents of Vraja.
